What Is the Influenza Vaccine Used For?

Most commonly known as ‘flu’, influenza is a contagious respiratory illness that infects the nose, throat and lungs. Influenza can lead to dangerous complications in the elderly, young children and people with compromised immune systems. The most effective way to prevent catching influenza is by getting an influenza vaccine.

These are the people who are at higher risk of developing serious influenza complications:

• Elderly aged 65 years and older
• Children aged 18 years or younger
• Pregnant women
• People with existing medical conditions

The influenza vaccine shot is normally administered by injection into the muscle.

Keep in mind that the influenza vaccine does not offer immediate protection against the virus. Instead, it takes two weeks for protection to develop after vaccination. For the above high risk group, it is recommended to get the influenza vaccine yearly to obtain maximum protection.

Influenza infection manifests similar to COVID-19. By getting influenza vaccination, you will be protected from influenza and this will decrease your chance to visit a healthcare facility.

Furthermore, there are some studies showing that it might provide some protection from COVID-19. Therefore, it is even more important to get your kids vaccinated.

What Precautions Should I Follow Before Receiving the Influenza Vaccination?

Before receiving the influenza vaccine, remember to inform your healthcare professional if you have any allergies to any components of the vaccine. Furthermore, you should take extra care if you have a severe allergy to eggs or have a history of Guillain-Barré Syndrome.

What are the side effects from Influenza Vaccination?

Severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis) include the below symptoms:

• Difficulty in breathing
• Breakout of skin rashes
• Swollen eyes, lips and/or tongue

Other side effects include:

• Dizziness, feeling faint
• Soreness or swelling at injection site
• Headache, body ache or slight fever

For caution, your healthcare professional may require you to remain at the clinic for an hour after your influenza vaccination.
